Meet TRING station, Herts., 10.00 (Euston 9.24). A circular walk of 13 - 14 miles at a medium pace through the Herts. / Bucks. Border, via the Ridgeway to Ivinghoe Beacon with lunch at the Rose and Crown in Ivinghoe (has a good restaurant) and returning partly along the Grand Union Canal.

Newington to Rainham

Meet NEWINGTON station, Kent, 9.55 (Victoria 8.52, Bromley South 9.09, Rainham 9.51). A linear walk of about 15 miles to Rainham, past the creeks of the Medway and hopefully catching the orchards in flower, with lunch at Lower Halstow.

Meet BROOKMANS PARK station, Herts., 9.42 (Kings Cross 9.11). A linear walk of about 13 - 14 miles at a brisk pace to Broxbourne. Pub. or picnic lunch at the Woodman, West End, after 9 miles. Stations are on different lines, probably returning to Liverpool Street.

Meet GOMSHALL station, Surrey, 10.03 (Waterloo 9.00, change Guildford 9.48). A hilly, circular walk of about 15 miles at a brisk pace to Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill, with a pub. lunch at Holmbury St Mary. Probably returning by bus from Gomshall to Guildford due to the infrequent rail service.

Meet BRAINTREE station, Essex, 9.42 (Liverpool Street 8.32, change Witham 9.25). A moderately brisk circular walk of about 15 miles westwards along part of the Flitch Way (disused railway line) and then returning to Braintree.

Wendover to Tring

Meet WENDOVER station, Bucks., 10.00 (Marylebone 9.12). A linear walk of about 10 miles to Tring station, along the disused Wendover arm of the Grand Union Canal, via Tring Reservoirs and College Lake Wildlife Centre. Pub. stop around 1.00 pm at the traditional Anglers Retreat at Startop's End for good food, real ale and a conversation with the Parrot. Stations are on different lines, probably returning to Euston.

Charlton's Parks and the Thames Barrier

Meet WOOLWICH ARSENAL station, SE18 6EU, 10.30 (National Rail / DLR). A circular walk of about 5 miles (3 hours) at an easy pace. An amazingly varied loop from Woolwich with highlights including the Royal Artillery Barracks, Maryon Wilson Park, the Thames Barrier and the Royal Arsenal.

Alton circular

Meet ALTON station, Hants., 10.10 (Waterloo 8.53 or 9.00 change at Woking 9.30). A trip to Alresford on the Mid Hants. Steam Railway on the Watercress Line (steam train departing at 10.50). Then a linear walk of about 11 miles back to Alton. Bring food for a picnic lunch, by a pond in a wood. The ticket for the steam railway is about £9 - £11, depending on group size.

Hastings to Rye

Meet HASTINGS station, East Sussex, 10.09 (Charing Cross 8.25, London Bridge 8.33, Sevenoaks 8.59). A linear walk of about 15 miles to Rye, with some steep climbs. Following the coast path as far as Fairlight before heading north to Icklesham (lunch at the Queen's Head), then on to Rye via Winchelsea. Buy a return ticket to Rye.

Sydenham Hill to Catford

Meet SYDENHAM HILL station 10.08 (Victoria 9.55, but check for engineering works). A linear walk of about 7 miles to Catford station exploring woodland, parks, cemeteries and uplands of South East London, including a fine view from Horniman Gardens. Lunch in the Catford Constitutional Club at the walk's end for those who fancy.

Meet DORKING MAIN station, Surrey, 9.52 (Waterloo 9.02, Clapham Junction 9.11). A circular walk of about 13½ miles at a steady pace with some steep ascents. Via the Pilgrims Way and Betchworth to Brockham for lunch. Then the Greensand Way and Ranmore Common.

A linear walk of about 13 miles at a medium to fast pace to Godalming station, with short stops at viewpoints. Via Gibbet Hill to Brook (pub. lunch at the Dog and Pheasant) and continuing on the Greensand Way via Wormley and Great Enton. Buy a day return ticket to Haslemere.

River to Downs, Part 4: Addington's Nature Reserves

Meet COOMBE LANE Tramlink stop, CR0 5RF, 10.30 (Trams from Wimbledon and Croydon stations). A linear walk of about 4 miles (2½ - 3 hours) at an easy pace to New Addington Tramlink stop. The long-awaited next stage of this route links green spaces and nature reserves on the edge of London, like Bramley Bank, Selsdon Woods, Hutchinson's Bank and including parts of the London Loop.

Chichester to Rowlands Castle

Meet CHICHESTER station, West Sussex, 10.34 (Victoria 9.02, Clapham Junction 9.07, East Croydon 9.17). A spectacular linear walk of about 18 miles at a medium - fast pace to Rowlands Castle. Up to the Trundle, then winding through an ancient yew grove. Picnic lunch split into two stops, both with long, beautiful views and a pub. at the end, near the station. A Joint walk with South Bank Group. Buy a return ticket to Havant via any route to cover the different lines.

Swale to to Sheerness

Meet SWALE station, Kent, 10.21 (Victoria 9.05, change Sittingbourne 10.13). A linear walk of 12 - 14 miles across Elmley Marshes, with very little shelter, probably to Eastchurch. Then maybe a bus to Sheerness for the train return. Bring a packed lunch as there are no suitable pubs on the Marshes. A return ticket to Sheerness is suggested.

Meet CLANDON station, Surrey, 9.53 (Waterloo 9.03, Clapham Junction 9.12). A linear walk of about 15 miles at a medium to fast pace to Boxhill & Westhumble station, with short stops at viewpoints. Via Clandon Downs to the North Downs Way, then Shere to Sutton Abinger for a pub. lunch at The Volunteer. Continuing via Abinger Roughs and Ranmore Common. Buy a day return ticket to Clandon, which should suffice although the stations are on different lines.
