Meet AMBERLEY station, West Sussex, 9.57 (Victoria 8.32, East Croydon 8.47). A circular walk of about 16 miles at a brisk pace, walking west on the South Downs and descending Barlavington Down with great views of the Sussex Weald, to a pub. lunch at Duncton. Then returning via attractive Sussex villages and the River Arun.

Meet THEYDON BOIS underground station 10.00 (Central Line). A linear walk of about 13 - 14 miles at a brisk pace to Broxbourne with pub./ café / picnic lunch at Walthan Abbey. Broxbourne is outside the Travelcard zone but within the PAYG (Oyster Card reader) area.

Meet WENDOVER station, Bucks., 10.00 (Marylebone 9.12). A linear walk of about 10 miles along the disused Wendover arm of the Grand Union Canal, via Tring Reservoirs and College Lake Wildlife Centre, to Tring station (returning to Euston). A pub. stop around 13.00 at the traditional Anglers Retreat at Startop's End, for good food, real ale, and a conversation with the Parrot. If there is serious engineering work disruption, as last time, please assume this walk is cancelled.

Meet HENLEY-ON-THAMES station, Oxford, 10.02 (Paddington 8.36, Twyford 9.50 or Paddington 8.52 or 9.00, change Reading and Twyford are quicker but with tighter connections). A brisk circular walk of 16 - 17 miles in the Chilterns north of Henley. Via Pishill, Ibstone (lunch at The Fox), Fingest, Hambledon and finally along the Thames from Hambledon Lock back to Henley.

Green Chain Walk : Meet FOREST HILL station, SE23 3HB, 10.30. A linear walk of about 4 miles (2½ hours) at an easy pace to Crystal Palace (both stations National Rail / Overground). Explore the "Southwark extension" of South East London's walking treasure the Green Chain Walk, on an old railway track through ancient woodland and past the airy site of Crystal Palace, overlooking a sumptuous park with its famous dinosaur sculptures.

Stations are on different lines, but from London a return ticket to Betchworth covers both journeys, or from Croydon a return ticket to Dorking.
