Walk Details

Saddleworth edges, inc. Alphin. (circular).

Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 8 November 2008
Start gridref: SE013035
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 12 miles
Longer description: Saddleworth edges, inc. Alphin. Start Dovestone res., lower CP near sailing club. In the printed programme it is down as Binn Green, which is actually the upper car park. Approx. 35 minutes from the Pyramid.

This is a classic horshoe walk along the high edges surrounding the reservoirs of Dovestone, Yeoman Hey, and Greenfield. We start by walking alongside the three reservoirs before proceeding alongside Greenfield brook. Then a short section of very easy scrambling along Birchen Clough before reaching the higher ground of Raven Stones after a short climb. From now on we maintain height for the major part of the walk, with minor undulations. We follow the edge along until Chew reservoir, the highest reservoir in England at 1600 ft. From here we follow the edge across what is now access land to Alphin Pike, before descending towards Greenfield and making our way back to the start. Given decent conditions the views are inspiring. Some idea of the walk can be found from pictures of the recce at http://tinyurl.com/ 649yy8 although we are unlikely to get weather as good as the day of the recce!

The car park is pay-and-display, either £1 or £2, I think. There are toilets here. Afterwards, optional refreshment at the King William IV hotel (CAMRA pub) less than a mile away on Chew Valley road (A669). OL3 7DD.

General Note

Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
