Walk Details

Castleton circular.

Group: Stockport
Date: Tuesday 2 December 2008
Start gridref: SK146828
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 10 miles
Longer description: Start from Castleton. Free roadside parking on outskirts (A6187) just outside the village centre.
This is a walk no doubt familiar to many of us, but no apologies for this as I think this is one of the best walks to do at this time of year, with Castleton resplendent in all its Christmas finery.

We start from the A6187 just outside the village centre, and head for the ascent of Cave Dale. (N.B. Cave Dale can be wet, good Winter leather boots highly recommended!) Looking back there are excellent views of Peveril Castle with Lose Hill in the background. At the top of Cave Dale, we turn Northerly to make our way over to Mam Nick car park, where we will stop for refreshments, this will have taken about 1½ hours.

We continue along the MamTor ridge, taking in Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill, before dropping down and crossing the River Noe and the railway to the very low slopes of Win Hill. From here we follow the river valley down to Hope, passing the church to pick up the river valley of Peakshole Water, and a walk back to Castleton just as the sun is setting behind the hills in front of us. We will finish around 3:40, to take refreshments in one of Castletons hostelrys, hopefully sat around a roaring log fire. A fine walk to start off the festive season!

Well behaved, fit, cute dogs welcome.

General Note

Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
