Walk Details

Longshaw Estate circular.

Group: Stockport
Date: Tuesday 6 January 2009
Start gridref: SK266800
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 12 miles
Longer description: Start from Longshaw Lodge NT CP, (near Grindleford). (Note:- The car park closes at 4:30, so we need to be away on time.) Also, the walk starts at 10:00 am NOT 10:15 as shown in the midweek walks section of Stockport Ramblers website!

This is an excellent 12 mile leg stretcher to get the blood flowing again after the excesses of the festive period, with fine views of the Derwent Valley looking down towards Chatsworth, a visit to the historic Padley Chapel and an ascent of the beautiful Padley Gorge. We start with a walk through Longshaw Estate, making our way across to Froggatt Edge and continuing along Curbar Edge. We will have a break along here, it is sheltered and there are good views of the valley below. We cross the road, to continue along Baslow Edge to Wellingtons monument, where there are good views down to Baslow and Chatsworth. We descend from the edge, down to Curbar and Calver Bridge, to follow the River Derwent back through Froggatt and to Padley. We will have a quick break at Padley Chapel, which was originally the gatehouse of the 14th Century Padley Hall. Our final ascent is then through Padley Gorge, before emerging again into the Longshaw Estate, with views across to the Iron Age fort of Carl Wark and back to the carpark. We will take refreshments at The Millstone Country Inn, which is back along the main road into Hathersage, on the right hand side.

General Note

Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
