Start time: 10am

Distance: 11 miles
Longer description: Start from Marsden Parish church. Roadside parking outside main gates. 45 minutes from the Pyramid.
If you have an interest in the history of cross-Pennine transport, then this walk is not to be missed. We will visit sites which chronicle developments in transport from Packhorse trails, Turnpike roads, canals and through to the Railway Age.
We start from the Parish Church, first making our way through the village centre before making our way up towards Deer Hill and picking up the Deer Hill conduit, which contours around Deer Hill and from where the views change from the Colne Valley to the beautiful Wessenden Valley. There is now easy flat walking as we follow the waterway, taking our first break at a small sheltered area by a stream. This will be after about 1 hour & 20 minutes. After following the conduit a little further, we drop down to Wessenden Lodge, and pick up the Pennine Way, initially following a Land Rover track before picking up the footpath over Black Moss to reach Swellands and Black Moss reservoirs. These reservoirs were constructed as part of the works during the construction of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. We will have our second break here. From here we make our way across to Pule Hill, following for some time the route of the Turnpike Road built by Blind Jack of Knaresborough. From Pule Hill, we make our way back down towards the village, roughly following the A62 before branching off to Eastergate, and the Packhorse Bridge. A short walk from here brings us to Tunnel End, where the famous Standedge Canal and Railway Tunnels emerge from the Pennines. We will have a short break here. The return back to Marsden is then by following the Canal before descending what is known locally as the Switchback back down to the Church. Well behaved dogs welcome.

General Note
Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
