Walk Details
Pendle circular.
Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 28 February 2009
Start gridref: SD823403
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 11 miles
Longer description: Start from Barley village visitor centre. 1 mile SE of Pendle Hill. There was an honesty box for the car park (£1) when I did the recce, and from the sound my pound coin made I was one of the few honest people around that day.
We start by walking past Lower Black Moss reservoir and on to Twiston Moor. From here we head through Twiston and on towards Downham. Pendle Hill now looms to our left, and we start the ascent at about 4½ miles. We are taking one of the the steeper ascents (but not the steepest) of Pendle Hill, but this is the only major ascent on the walk. We reach the plateau of Pendle Hill at about the 6 mile point, where we will find the shelter of a wall and have our lunch. Then on to the trigpoint, where we initially follow Ogden Clough, but soon divert to Black Hill and Badger Wells Hill. We now head East, passing to the South of Lower Ogden reservoir. Then past the reservoir, and back to Barley village.
We are hopefully due some favourable weather for this visit to Pendle Hill, and if so we will have some very good views. Towards the latter stages of the walk it is likely to be boggy, so good boots and gaiters are recommended.
We aim to walk as a group, so it is my intent that, particularly during the ascents, we wait for those at the back to catch up, and give them a minute or two to catch their breath. This will have minimal effect on the time taken for the walk. We should finish around 4pm.
Optional refreshment afterwards at the Pendle Inn, very close to the car park.

General Note
Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
