Walk Details

Stalybridge circular.

Group: Stockport
Date: Monday 13 April 2009
Start gridref: SD988010
Start time: 11am
Grade: Leisurely
Distance: 8 miles
Longer description: Start from Castle Clough CP (free), off Buckton Vale rd, Carrbrook, Stalybridge. (via Huddersfield rd B6175). SD988010. 8 miles. Graded C+ in our programme, meaning it is hillier than usual for this grade of walk.

The car park is approx. 30 minutes by car from the Pyramid.

Directions:
Easiest way:
M60 to J24.
M67 to end.
Go straight on at roundabout (1st exit A57)
Turn left at lights after ½ mile, then bear left onto Mottram road (A618).
After 2¼ miles take a right at traffic lights, signed Millbrook & Stalybridge Country park (B6175 Huddersfield road)
After just under 2 miles you come to a mini roundabout, with what used to be the Buckton Castle pub on your left (now the "Spice Room" restaurant, or something similar). Turn right here and the car park is about 700 yards on the left. There are speed cameras on Mottram road (40 mph) and Huddersfield road (30 mph).

This is a short, exhilarating high-level walk with good views. It is a repeat of a walk done in Autumn 2007, although in reverse which means less ascent in the second half of the walk. In 2007 it rained miserably throughout. Good weather has been booked for this walk. :) So if all you can remember is rain, cold and misery, give it another go. On the other hand, if it's raining better give it a miss!

The walk is 8 miles (not 7 as in the printed programme) and hilly, but don't let that put you off as we will not leave you behind!

Optional refreshment afterwards at the Stamford Arms pub, about 700 yards further on up Huddersfield road after the mini roundabout, on the left.

General Note

Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
