Walk Details
Macclesfield forest circular.
Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 2 May 2009
Start gridref: SJ961711
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 11 miles
Longer description: The walk which starts from Trentabank car park, Macclesfield Forest, at 10:00 a.m. is approximately 11.25 miles long. It has been planned to explore the area to the west of Shutlingsloe between it and Croker Hill and Sutton Common. Excellent views are obtained of these as well as Teggs Nose from various points on the itinerary. While we will mainly be walking on good paths there are unfortunately two boggy areas which make it advisable to wear good boots and gaiters. Three formal stops are planned, the first at Clough Brook for a morning break at round 11:30 a.m., the second at Nabbs Hill for lunch at round 1:30 p.m. and a final afternoon break sometime after we pass Lowerhouse. Other short breaks are anticipated at interesting points to provide us with a chance to catch our breath and to keep the group together as we admire the views. The walk should take between 5½ and 6 hours to complete.
Starting from Trentabank our route passes through Shutlingsloe, Banktop, Clough Brook, Hammerton Knowl Farm, Hazels, Cessbank Common, Brown Hill, Bennetshill, Greasley Hollow, Nabbs Hill, Butterlands, Brooms, Lower Pethills, Lowerhouse, Meg Lane, Lees House Farm and back to the car park. Dogs if on lead.
Optional refreshments following the end of the walk will be at the Church House Inn on Church Lane in Sutton Lane Ends. (Sketch location map provided on the day).

General Note
Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
