Walk Details
Hardcastle crags circular.
Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 30 May 2009
Start gridref: SD988292
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 12 miles
Longer description: Hardcastle Crags. Start from NT CP at Hebden Dale. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead on the Wadsworth Moor Estate.
Longer description:- Meet at the National Trust Car Park in Hebden Dale. There is a charge, but for National Trust Members there is a free Car Park approx. 200 yards before this one. There is a toilet block. (From Hebden Bridge take the A6033 road. In about half a mile there is a road to the left, with a Cul-de-Sac road sign. Follow this to the end.)
Another cracking Yorkshire walk, you lucky, lucky people!! From the car park, we will follow the wooded valley of Hebden Water to Gibsons Mill, where there are toilets, an exhibition and a Clog makers. From here, we will follow an easy track to the Crags themselves, where there will be the option of a climb to the top of one of them, giving fine overhead views of Hebden Dale. Continuing along we will eventually leave the woodlands and arrive at Black Dean, where the foundation stones of an old railway viaduct remain. I assume the railway was built to serve the quarries which provided the stone for the many reservoirs around here. Continuing along, we will pass the Scout Hut at Blake Dean, making our way around The Ridge to the valley of the Walshaw Dean reservoirs, crossing the dam of the Upper reservoir. Then following the track over Wadsworth Moor, (at one point it is possible to see 6 reservoirs,) to the tiny picturesque hamlet of Walshaw, and a final climb up to Shackleton Knoll. From here we will descend to a track, and back to the Car Park in Hebden Dale. Guaranteed to leave you wanting more!!

General Note
Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
