Walk Details
Langsett circular.
Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 11 July 2009
Start gridref: SE177011
Start time: 9am
Grade: Strenuous
Distance: 15 miles
Longer description: Near Langsett. Start from layby on left opp. Dog and Partridge. SE177011. 15 miles. No dogs are allowed on these Grouse moors.
Meet at the Eastern end of the large lay-by, opposite the Dog & Partridge Country pub. The walk described below is around 15 miles, but it may be necessary to amend it slightly to get back to the Dog & Partridge in time for the hotpot. We will be crossing the Howden Moors, which are probably the least visited area in the Peak District. They are also the watershed for the Rivers Don, flowing to the East, the Etherow, flowing West and the Derwent, flowing South.
From the Dog & Partridge we will pick up a track heading South, marked on the map as Hordron Road, and will eventually pick up a stream, which is the Little Don river, also known as The Porter. After following this for a while, we will head South onto Howden Edge. This is the remote area of the walk, paths are either non-existent or in a very poor state, often boggy. We will be walking over this rough ground for 2 miles, so I do recommend good leather boots and possibly gaiters if there has been wet weather. After walking West along Howden Edge for a while, we will make our way South again, to Hoar Clough, again making our way through rough ground, to eventually find a faint path which we follow to pick up the infant River Derwent. From now on, the going is much easier, and continues to be so to the end of the walk. We will follow the Derwent valley South Easterly to an area known as Slippery Stones, where we then turn North Easterly following the Cut Gate path, back over the moors to Langsett. We will walk around Landsett reservoir, then follow Swinden Lane back to the Dog & Partridge for a well earned supper! Some pictures here: http://tinyurl.com/ dzcsr9

General Note
Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.
For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
