Walk Details

Langsett circular.

Group: Stockport
Date: Saturday 11 July 2009
Start gridref: SE211005
Start time: 10am
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 11 miles
Longer description: Start from Langsett reservoir visitor centre (free car park and toilets). We start by
walking West along the North side of the reservoir. At the end of the reservoir we head South along Delf Edge, and on to Mickleden Edge. From here we follow Cut Gate, an ancient right of way used by farmers with
their livestock to get from the Hope, Derwent and Woodlands valleys to Penistone market. We continue on to Margery Stones and Margery Hill. Then we head North-West along Outer Edge before picking up Near Cat Clough until we reach Hordron Clough. Here we meet the picturesque and hidden valley of the Porter or Little Don river until we reach Crookland Wood. We now head East through the woods until we reach the CP again. This is a repeat of a walk led in December 2007, when the weather was pretty abysmal. Hopefully we will be luckier this time! This is a delightful walk (given favourable weather) with good views and (for the most part) on very good paths. It may be slightly boggy in parts, but it is generally very good underfoot. We should return by 4 pm at the latest.

General Note

Most walks listed here are intended primarily for Ramblers' Association members. Non-members are welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
